Some training programs start with tandem flights before progressing to solo flights to ensure foundational skills are solid. Consider your comfort level, learning style, and the recommendations of your instructor when deciding between solo and tandem flights.
SOLO
- Solo flights offer direct, hands-on control, which is crucial for developing your skills.
- Successfully managing a solo flight builds confidence and self-reliance.
- You can clearly track your progress and set personal milestones.
|
TANDEM
- Tandem flights allow you to observe and learn from the instructor's actions in real-time.
- Tandem flights can help build confidence before transitioning to solo flights.
- In tandem flights, the instructor can provide immediate feedback and correction.

Find a current USHPA-certified instructor. They will activate your USHPA membership (60-day Student or Pilot) or provide a temporary 10-day membership as well as teach you the basics. When choosing an instructor consider the following: Are they a USHPA member with an active instructor certification? What seasons work best for the training site they use? Do they also offer or have recommendations for tandem flights, gear, tours and clinics?

Rating Levels:
- H1/P1/S1 - Beginner Pilot
- H2/P2/S2 - Novice Pilot
- H3/P3/S3 - Intermediate Pilot
- H4/P4/S4 - Advanced Pilot
- H5/P5/S5 - Master Pilot
