Born on the East coast, Van Spurgeon learned to fly in the hills of Vermont and New Hampshire. After graduating from Dartmouth College, Van moved West and developed his hang gliding skills in California: Torrey pines, Lake Elsinore, and flying competitively in the Owens Valley. Van currently serves on the Dartmouth Board as secretary.
